Home/Our Corporate Social Responsibility
We are committed to making our community a better place and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
We fully recognise the potential impact that the activities that our Company can have on our employees, customers, suppliers, partners and the wider community and environment in which we operate.
We have adopted a proactive approach to Corporate Social Responsibility and are committed to acting in a socially responsible manner, with consideration for those around us, at all times. We strive to be an exemplar of best practice in all of the areas in which we work.
HFL support Hits Radio Cash for Kids’, a grant-giving charity which helps children in need. Their mission is to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and young people who are affected by illness, poverty, neglect or have additional needs. They believe that all children should be able to express their individuality, achieve their potential and live life to the full.
The charity works with local grassroots organisations across the region that aim to make a difference to young lives, and directly support families who often have nowhere else to go through their regular grant rounds.
For every £1 raised, the charity aims to put back 80p in the local community.

HFL support PCrefurb, a Glossop based charity that aims to “bridge the digital divide”. The charity refurbishes donated IT equipment and redistribute it to those most in need, helping people connect with training and education and to support their well-being.
PCrefurb also provide digital skills training in the community and engage volunteers, some of whom face complex challenges, in all areas of our work. We work together for social and environmental good.

Each year we take part in the Manchester Duck Race which takes place over the Easter bank holiday for Brainwave Children’s Charity.
During the pandemic the duck race was cancelled but the best dressed duck competition still went ahead and our contender, Michael Quackson, won 1st prize! Michael was dressed by Daisy Patterson.
Brainwave is a charity that exists to help children with disabilities to achieve greater independence by aiming to improve mobility, communication skills and learning potential through a range of educational and physical therapies.

In 2021, HFL took part in the Government’s ‘Kick Start’ scheme in collaboration with Salford City Council.
The scheme consisted of taking on young people who were out of work and school an opportunity to gain M&E work exposure by shadowing an experienced engineer on site for 3 days per week over a 6-month period.
In total, 3 kick-starters trainees converted the opportunity and went on to become full time apprentices at HFL with full study support.
Although the Kick-Start scheme has since been terminated by the Government, HFL consider this experience a success as it demonstrated how HFL, its Clients and Council could come together to provide opportunities for young job seekers.
HFL are actively involved in both administrative and engineering apprenticeships.
HFL are actively involved in both administrative and engineering apprenticeships.
Over the years, HFL has built long standing relationships with Salford City College who have supported us in training 9 Building Services Apprentices and North Lancs Training Group who have helped us in developing 7 office administrators.
HFL pride ourselves in recruiting apprentices and giving them the hands on professional training which complements their theoretical studies. All our Building Services Apprentices report to our Dedicated Apprenticeship Manager who mentors them on their portfolio and ensures they are adequately trained, equipped and accompanied for the jobs they take on.
Many of these apprentices are still involved in the business, holding positions of responsibility and helping to grow the business.

HFL rent a private box at the Lowry Theatre and Gallery in Salford Quays where we regularly raffle off show tickets to raise funds for charities.
In 2011, we installed solar panels on the roof of our Manchester Head Office which are still producing electricity today.
Over a ten-year period, the 316 square meter array has produced roughly 418 MWh of electricity and have saved an estimated 226 tons of CO2 which would otherwise need roughly 10,200 trees to absorb.
The company invested nearly £120,000 for the installation of 200 Monocrystalline Solar panels and took advantage of the Carbon Trust's (Siemens) loan to pay back the investment. HFL also took advantage of the Government's feed in tariff prior to the tariff being halved on 12th December 2011.
In addition, the electricity generated by the panels is directly consumed on site since the business is busiest during the day - powering assets like air conditioning, IT equipment and LED lighting. This has translated into significant energy savings for HFL, which have increased over the past year with rising energy prices which HFL would have otherwise been exposed to.
The pay back on the investment was calculated to be just after the 5th year of install.
In 2021, we refurbished our offices to high efficiency LED lighting and sensors which cut our lighting bills by over 70%.
We also installed tinting on our windows to protect against excessive heat entering our offices in the summer while reducing the need for blinds and optimise natural lighting.
In 2020, we began replacing our fleet of diesel vehicles for Toyota Corolla petrol hybrids.
The 1.8-litre hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its class and emits as little as 76g of Co2/km with a range averaging about 60 mpg.
We are now fully hybrid throughout our estate fleet of vehicles which counts ~80% of our overall fleet. We will next be replacing our commercial vans.
